Summary | Hyperbaric lidocaine with 0.5% bupivacaine is often used spinally, providing anesthesia with rapid onset and satisfactory duration, although complicated with arteria hypotension, especially undesirable in aged patients. This study was designed to determine, whether combinations of lidocaine with lower than 0.5% concentrations of bupivacaine provides sufficient analgesia, without severe hypotension. We studied 31 patients undergoing elective surgery with a continuous spinal technique. Group A received 1 ml of 5% lidocaine and 2 ml of 0.5% bupivacaine, while group B received the same dose of lidocaine and 2 ml of 0.125 bupivacaine. During observation we assessed level of sensory block, motor block and the need of additional spinal administration of the previous used solution in both groups. We also studied arterial pressure and heart rate during the procedure. Spinal combination of 5% lidocaine with high and low concentration of bupivacaine provides sufficient analgesia in aged patients but the consequent hemodynamic changes are insignificant only when low concentration of bupivacaine is used. | |
