Summary | MRI contrast media can be a valuable tool in assessing myocardial perfusion and viability in ischemic heart disease, by quantifying the infarcted area and identifying myocardium at risk. The two main groups of contrast media currently used are: a) paramagnetic and b) magnetic susceptibility contrast media. Through the use of fast scanning techniques, MRI contrast media are capable of providing important information concerning reperfused and non-reperfused infarctions after thrombolytic treatment Although the ideal contrast agent is not presently available, the high-speed imaging techniques in conjunction with the new contrast media seem very promising. | |
