Summary | Ιn a double blind study, thirty nine patients with coronary heart disease were studied (mean age 54 range 30-79); twenty of them were treated with fish oil Maxepa 10 g daily and 19 with similar capsules of olive oil in the same dose (placebo group). Lipid analysis was performed before, at the 8 week and at the 12 week of the study. From the results of this study the following were observed: 1) The serum triglycerides decreased significantly in group A by 22% 8 weeks after starting treatment (p<0.01) and to a lesser degree 11% after 12 weeks of treatment (p:NS). In group B triglycerides slightly increased after 12 weeks of treatment. 2) No statistically significant changes were observed as regards total cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol. 3) None of the patients complained of any side effects. It is concluded that Maxepa fish oil is a safe lipid lowering agent that has a favourable effect especially on the reduction of the triglycerides levels. | |
