Summary | In studies concerning the depilatory action of proteolytic enzymes, the effect of three such enzymes, chymotrypsin, papain and trypsin, applied by iontophoresis on guinea pig skin, was studied at the histological level. All enzymes, applied in concentrations of 0.1-1 mg/ml, produced moderate to very intense effects, such as the presence of epithelial cells in the lumen of cystic dilated hair follicles, detachment of inner root sheath and dystrophic follicles. The action of chymotrypsin, followed immediately by papain, produced strong degenerative acantholytic changes. The effects appeared after one minute iontophoresis of the enzymes and a further thirty minutes of interaction period and were maximal if the period of enzyme iontophoresis was increased to five minutes. | |
