Summary | A randomized, double-blind, group comparative study was performed in 16 hypogonadal mate patients in order to compare the effects on hormone plasma levels, on sexual activity and mental state of testosterone undecanoate (TU) and mesterolone (M). The TU-treated group consisted of 9 patients and the M-treated group consisted of 7 patients. Plasma testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a-estradiol (E2), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin (PRL) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) levels were evaluated before and during treatment with TU or M for 4 weeks. Moreover, libido, sexual activity and mental state were assessed and scored according to well accepted criteria. The daily dose of TU was 120 mg and of M 75 mg. TU induced a significant rise of T, DHT, E2 and DHEA-S, while FSH, LH and PRL levels remained unchanged. TU induced also a marked improvement of the sexual activity and mental state. | |
