Summary | A generation ago, iodine-deficiency was prevalent in our country, and most of the goitres diagnosed had all the characteristics of iodine deficiency. Now iodine deficiency has been virtually eliminated, thanks to iodized salt and to silent iodine prophylaxis. Now, about two thirds of the goitres diagnosed are associated with autoimmunity, probably induced by the higher iodine intake. In both the past iodine-deficient time and the present iodine-sufficient era, the iodine intake is not strikingly different between goitrous and nongoitrous persons. So, we think, that other (? genetic or ‘host’) factors modify the effects of the iodine intake. | |
