Summary The term photoaging is used to describe the constellation of signs that distinguish skin which has endured prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from that which has been largely protected from exposure. Although there are no data on prevalence, it is common in all races, and more severe changes are seen in those with fair skin, outdoor life styles, and those living in areas of high incident UVR. The skin aging is clinically different from photoaging. The clinical signs of the biological aging are the loss of elasticity, atrophy and the deep wrinkling. The main histological characteristics are the epidermal atrophy and the flattening of the der-mal-epidermal junction. On the contrary the clinical changes visible in photoaging include wrinkling, roughness, pallor, irregular pigmentation, loosening, telangiectasia, actinic keratoses and basal cell epitheliomas. AHA, topical all-trans retinoic acid, other topical retinoids and chemical peelings acquire an important place in the management of the photoaged skin lesions.
