| Summary | Among the major health problems of the world’s aging society is osteoporosis and its treatment. An ideal therapeutic approach improves the patient’s quality of life and solves the medical and socio-economic problems involved. However, when hormone replacement therapy is advised for high bone turnover postmenopausal women, usually few patients show good compliance. Alternative strategies are therefore being investigated. Phytoestrogens have been the object of recent studies due to their mild oestrogenic effect and their possible potential role in osteoporosis prevention and/or treatment. A preliminary study of the oestrogenic effect of a Greek plant’s extract on the rat ovariectomy experimental model of osteoporosis is presented. | |
