Summary The aim of the study was to identify the attitude of nursing students towards psychiatric disease and the influence of socio-demographic variables to their attitudes. A total of 300 undergraduate students of a technological nursing school (3-year studies) took part in the study. Students were at the 3rd year of their studies, at the 2nd semester, before and after the completion psychiatric course. The total number of respondents was 295 students, 253 were female and 42 were male. Informed consent for participation in the study was provided by all students. Opinion about Mental Illness (OMI) scale of Cohen and Struening was used to assess students’ attitudes. A logistic and a linear regression analysis made by the use of SPSS 10.0. Place of birth and raise have shown a significant effect on students’ opinions about social discrimination and social restriction of the mentally ill. From the other socio-demographic variables sex, age and fathers’ occupation affected mainly the factor representing social restriction. On the other hand, age, marital status and the number of family members seemed to influence the opinions reflecting the need of the provision of social care to the mentally Hi patients. Concluding, the results shows that contrary to social discrimination and the positive attitudes to social restriction against mentally ill people, the students, recognize the need of social care and social integration of patients. These mean the lack of information to the issues of mentally health.
