Summary The aim of the present study was to obtain a picture in reference to the frequency of vaccination of nursing personnel (N/P) of the country against hepatitis B. Since 1983, preventive immunization is applied against hepatitis B in high-risk groups of infection, including the nursing personnel. In order to obtain this type of information, an anonymous and personal questionnaire was used, which was completed by 695 persons belonging to the nursing personnel of 6 hospitals, 4 health districts hospital with small and large bed capacities. For the statistical analysis of data, the x2 (Pearson, Fisher Exact test) was used, in order to compare the qualitative characteristics, as well as the logistic dependence concerning the influence of the demographic, social and professional factors of the vaccinated Nursing personnel. A percentage of 80.6% were tested according to their statement, 14.6% were found positive for antibodies and 1.4% for HBsAg. The percentage of vaccinated personnel was found to be very low, namely 56.2%, whilst differences in the frequency of vaccination between two hospitals of small and large bed capacity were noted; these were 74.5% and 42.4% respectively. There was a significantly higher percentage (p -0.0001) of vaccination depending on the hospital in which the nursing personnel was located, according to the sample code of the hospital which corresponded to an independent hospital working environment. In our study it was found that the N/P, which works in the provinces, was vaccinated at a significantly higher percentage (p = 0.002) compared to the N/P of the hospitals of Attica. The N/P of the sample, which stated that it had a high degree of aware of the importance of prevention, was vaccinated against HB at a rate of 94.5%. In conclusion it can be stated that the percentage of participation of the N/P in the vaccination program against hepatitis B is low and needs to be increased.
