Summary Acne vulgaris pathogenesis is attributed to many factors. The man etiological factor remains to be identified. Recently research on the cellular and cytokine profile of a new type of autoimmune diseases named as autoinflammatory syndromes showed common findings with acne vulgaris. Complementary, genetic studies on the gene expression of autoimmune diseases showed resemblance with acne. The combination of an autoimmune response on a susceptible genetic background may explain in the future some of the plethora of presentations seen in acne vulgaris patients.
