Summary | Hypericum perforatum is a traditional remedy which derives from a plant belonging to the Hypericaceae family known as St. John’s Wort, currently undergoing extensive clinical and laboratory investigation. Hypericum perforatum has a complex and diverse chemical synthesis, including volatile oils (0.05 to 0.3%, such as α-pinene, and cineole), anthraquinones, carotenoids, cumarine, flavonoids (0.5-1.0%,hyperoside, quercetin, and rutin), naphthodianthrones (0.1-0.3%, 80-90% of which are hypericin and pseudohypericin), carbolic acids, phloroglucins (up to 3% hyperforin), xanthones, and proanthocyanidins. The plant possesses antiviral and antidepressant effects due to it’s constituents in naphthodianthrones, hypericin and pseudohypericin while hyperforin, and any flavonoid compounds may exert antidepressant properties. Hypericum perforatum has already been known in folk medicine as a successful wound healing remedy used for the preparation of various products for local application, focused on skin or mucosa injury of various origin. | |
