| Summary | This article examines the potential role of clinical aromatherapy as a complementary therapy in the care of elderly patients with acute and chronic pain. Although the use of aromatherapy is not restricted to nursing, it is beginning to be accepted as part of holistic nursing care. Aromatherapists should be fully trained in aromatherapy and have adequate knowledge of pathology, pharmacology, counseling and nutrition so that they are able to comprehend the extent of the problem, provide advice, and know when referral to a specialist is needed. Nursing covers this spectrum of additional knowledge. The approach to the integration of aromatherapy in nursing is distinctive because of its consistency with nursing values. The two case studies that are described in detail illustrate the flexibility of aromatherapy as it can be applied in different ways and in different environments. The first case study describes the case of a woman of 70 years in the third postoperative day with pain and nausea and the second case study describes the case of man of 90 years with post herpetic neuralgia. | |
