Summary A retrospective survey was performed to determine the incidence rate and incidence density rate, and to identify the risk factors associated with Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) in rehabilitation centers patients. The study occurred during a fourth-month period in two rehabilitation centers in Athens, Greece. All patients who remained in the rehabilitation center for >48 hours were studied. A standardized Surveillance system based on the National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance (NNIS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was implemented. The study included 59 patients (3.363 patient-days). Among the 59 patients, 23 (38.9%) had in total 27 HAIs (45.8%). Among the 23 patients with HAIs, 19 (82.6%) had a single infection and 4 (17.4%) had two infections. Of the 27 detected HAIs the most frequent type was urinary tract infection (23:27, 85.1%). The incidence rate of HAIs was 45.8% and the incidence density of HAIs was 8 infections per 1000 patient-days. The incidence rate of urinary tract infections was 38.9% and the incidence density was 6.8 infections per 1000 patient-days. The incidence rate of respiratory tract infections was 5% and the incidence density was 0.8 infections per 1000 patient-days. The incidence rate of pressure ulcer was 1.6% and the incidence density was 0.2 infections per 1000 patient-days. A multivariate model showed that only two risk factors were significantly and independently responsible for HAIs in rehabilitation centers: anemia, (AOR 6.509, 95% CI 1.853-22.861, P=0.003), and use of urethral catheter(AOR 4.555, 95% CI 1.235- 16.806, P=0.023). In conclusion, our results highlight the need targeted, active HAIs surveillance in Rehabilitation centers patients.
