Summary The neurohypophysial protein 7B2 was isolated from the pituitary and was found to be located in the gonadotrophs. We studied the variations of plasma levels of 7B2-Immunoreactivity (7B2-IR) in healthy volunteers during the various phases of the normal menstrual cycle and compared these values with those of postmenopausal women. Twelve healthy (12) volunteers (mean age 28.6±14 [SD], range 17-39 years) were studied in the follicular phase (5th day), the ovulatory phase (14th -18th day) and luteal phase (25th day) of the cycle.  Levels of 7B2, LH, FSH, oestradiol and progesterone were estimated. Twenty five (25) healthy postmenopausal women (mean age 55.6±20 [SD], range 49-62 years) were also studied for 7B2, FSH, LH and oestradiol levels. In 12 healthy volunteers, in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, 7B2 was 26.4±1.73 pmol/l (mean±SEM). The 14th day, 26.4±1.83, the 16th day 27.3±1.73, the 17th day 26.9±1.76, the 18th day 26.6±0.75 pmol/l. In the luteal phase 7B2 levels were 28.9±0.63 pmol/l. During the follicular and ovulatory phase, there was a correlation between 7B2 and LH (r = 0.66, p <0.02 and r = 0.67, p <0.02, respectively).  During the luteal phase, there was no correlation between 7B2 and LH. In the postmenopausal group (n = 25), LH, FSH and oestradiol fluctuated, but all were within the postmenopausal levels. 7B2-IR was 46±3.0 pmol/l. There was significance difference in plasma 7B2 levels between premenopausal and postmenopausal women (p <0.05). In conclusion, plasma 7B2-IR does not differ significantly during the phases of the menstrual cycle. Changes in 7B2 plasma levels during the menopause either presents age differences or a close physiological relationship with the gonadotrophins due to their over-production.
