Summary Objective: To investigate the concentrations of plasma levels of soluble (s)TREM-1 in patients with sepsis and evaluate their predictive value on outcome, in comparison to SOFA score. Blood was taken from 43 patients with sepsis severe sepsis. Plasma concentrations of sTREM-1 were determined within 24 hours after admission in hospital. All septic patients had detectable levels of sTREM-1. Non-survivors had slightly lower levels of sTREM-1 compared to survivors but without statistical difference. Patients with bacteremia had lower levels of sTREM-1 compared to those with no bacteremia, but again statistically not significant. No correlation was detected between sTREM-1 and the severity of sepsis (SOFA) or GRP. Logistic regression showed that SOFA was the only parameter independently associated with death. sTREM-1 seems to be a potential marker for the presence of sepsis but not a predictor of outcome, while SOFA score has a significant prognostic value. More studies should be designed to evaluate sTREM value as a clinical tool in sepsis.
