Summary Saliva is a valuable biological liquid for forensic toxicology and clinical pharmacokinetics because it combines noninvasive sampling and no requirements for special facilities. The aim of the present research was to investigate the correlation between heroin’s metabolites 6-monacetylomorphine (6-MAM) and morphine in saliva and plasma. Samples were taken from 18 heroin addicts and analyzed by the enzyme-multiplied immunoassay technique (EMIT), followed by gas chromatography with nitrogen-phosphorus detection (GC-NPD). The results indicate that there is no statistically significant difference between plasma and saliva 6-MAM concentration during 2 hours following heroin’s use, while there is statistically significant correlation between them from the 3rd to the 6th hour. The results indicate that saliva could be useful as an analytical tool in toxicology and clinical pharmacology for heroin and other opioids detection, especially for acute sampling and concomitantly with recorded drug concentrations in other biological fluids as plasma or urine.
