Summary The CRF System, consisting of neuropeptides and their receptors, holds a principle role in mediating the stress response through central and peripheral pathways. We investigated its expression in the full thickness wall of normal and inflamed human gallbladder, using RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Ucn and CRF2(a) receptor gene transcripts were detected, but not CRF and CRF1. Peptide and receptor protein immunoreactivity was localized in epithelial cells of the gallbladder mucosa in a similar pattern and in both normal and inflamed tissues. Finally, CRH-BP gene expression and low levels of protein immunoreactivity were also shown. We conclude that Ucn is the major CRF neurpeptide expressed in the human liver, possibly acting in an autocrine manner via local CRF receptors.
