Summary This study evaluates the coping strategies of children with thalassaemia and haemophilia in comparison to the coping strategies of their healthy siblings, who lived in families with a member suffering from a chronic illness. A cross-cultural sample was used which included 168 children, aged 6 to 18 years, from three European countries, England, Italy and Greece. One hundred children were patients with haemophilia (n=58) or thalassaemia (n=42) and 68 healthy siblings. The Spirito’s Kidcope measure was used to assess the frequency and efficacy of children’s different coping strategies and the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children-Revised (WISC-R) for cognitive abilities. In dealing with stress, results showed that the most frequently coping strategies used by all groups of children were two emotion-focused and two problem-focused strategies. Children used least frequently emotion-focused strategies, which were considered dysfunctional and non-productive. Differences were found in the frequency of certain coping strategies related to country of origin and type of disease. It was assumed that these differences reflected differences in health system policies between countries and in family dynamics related to the varying impact of the two blood diseases and basically the considerable discomfort of conventional thalassaemia treatment.
