| Summary | The expansion of chemotherapy due to its benefits upon cancer patients has led to a significant concern about the health and safety of the personnel handling these drugs. The purpose of this descriptive study was to evaluate the existing knowledge and attitude of the health care workers regarding potential hazards and the side-effects experienced by them in relation to their occupational exposure to chemo-therapeutic agents, as well as the safety design adopted in the Greek hospitals. A self-evaluation questionnaire was completed by 353 health-care workers involved with the use of chemotherapeutic drugs in 24 Greek hospitals. The majority of the health care workers is aware of the dangers of their work and most of them use personal protective equipment. However, significant health problems have been experienced from the respiratory, CNS, reproductive, gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal system. Inadequate training and practically no medical surveillance has been provided to them, which seems to be the most important inhibitory factor for the safe handling of chemotherapy drugs. | ||
