Summary | Hyaluronic acid is a linear polymer of a disaccharide, which consists of glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamin. It is a major component of the extracellular matrix in most of human tissues and it is associated with tissue repair processes, due to its unique physicochemical properties. In the wound tissue hyaluronic acid can be found in great quantities and seems to play a key role in the regulation of the healing process, resulting in better quality final scar. Fetal wound healing is characterized by lack of fibrous scarring, which is also attributed to the functions of hyaluronic acid. The aim of the present study is the investigation of the effect of the exogenous administration of hyaluronic acid on the healing of sutured wounds and the evaluation of the post surgical aesthetic outcome with clinical parameters on the 10th postoperative day. Our sample consists of 30 scars, which have been examined in 12 patients. Only patients with multiple scars have been included in the study. Half of the scars in each patient were treated with 0.2% hyaluronic acid cream, while a placebo cream was applied on the rest. Digital photographs of the scars were taken on the 10th posttraumatic day and were assessed by three individual evaluators using the quantitative scale for clinical scar assessment by Beausang et al. The analysis of the evaluators’ assessments using Student’s t test did not show a statistically important difference between the two groups of scars (p=0.812). In conclusion, the topical administration of hyaluronic acid does not seem to influence the clinical outcome of wound healing on the 10th day after surgery. | |
