Summary | The ASPOC Project (ASPPOC, Antibiotic Surveillance Project on Perioperative Chemoprophylaxis) is a multicentric study carried out in European countries, aiming at improving the quality and establishing a successful and evidence-based perioperative chemoprophylaxis. The aim of this study, which is part of ASPPOC Phase I, was to check conformance to the guidelines for perioperative chemoprophylaxis in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and to trace out changes that must be made in Greece and Italy to improve its quality.
Methods: 2 South European countries participated in the study: Greece and Italy. Conformance to the recommended guidelines and quality of perioperative chemoprophylaxis were checked by use of the same questionnaire in each country. The following criteria of quality in chemoprophylaxis were checked: 1) application of chemoprophylaxis, 2) duration and time of initiation of chemoprophylaxis and 3) the kind of antibiotics used. Results: Greek surgeons usually applied 2 doses of a 2nd generation cephalosporin (ATC code J01DC), initiated chemoprophylaxis during preinduction to anesthesia, and in some cases of high risk for a postoperative infection they also used metronidazole (ATC code J01XD01), doxycycline (ATC code J01AA02) and netilmicin (ATC code J01GB07). Italian surgeons used piperacillin (ATC code J01CR05), initiated chemoprophylaxis during preinduction to anesthesia or during the operation in cesarian section, and stopped prophylaxis within 24 hours. Conclusions: The quality of perioperative chemoprophylaxis was not bad but inconsistencies to the recommended guidelines were observed in some cases. Further changes are required in order to improve the quality and establish a successful and evidence-based perioperative chemoprophylaxis in Obstetrics and Gynecology. |
