Summary | The management of patients using Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) principles requires integrating best available clinical evidence with individual clinical expertise, as well as conscientious use of the above, before making decisions about the care of individual patients. Physicians involved in Emergency Care (EC) often use treatment algorithms believing it minimizes medical errors and leads to better management and quicker expedition of individual cases. The aim of this study was to evidence-based evaluate EC treatment algorithms for 15 common emergencies. In order to achieve this, we systematically searched EMBASE, Pubmed, Scopus and Cochrane Database using the following search terms: hypoxic encephalopathy, acute bronchiolitis, status asthmaticus, anaphylaxia, acute ischemic stroke, acute traumatic brain injury, preeclampsia, cardiac arrest, atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, status epilepticus, and coma. Multiple inconsistencies between daily clinical practice and best available clinical evidence were revealed. This systematic review emphasizes the need for using EBM principles in daily clinical practice, in order to avoid medical errors and use of empirical guidelines. | ||
