Summary | Nitrous oxide (Ν2Ο) is an inhaled anesthetic actually used for conscious sedation in pediatric dentistry. It is a colorless and odorless gas with a rather sweet taste. Its action is mediated via the dopaminergic, alpha-2 adrenergic, NMDA and benzodiazepine receptors. It is characterized by a very low liposolubility, is not metabolized by the organism, has no affinity for any particular tissue and is not stored anywhere in the body. It is rapidly absorbed in the alveolar tissue, resulting in immediate sedation. Because of its rapid elimination, the patient can be dismissed shortly after the end of the inhalation. Its adverse effects are very limited. In pediatric dentistry, nitrous oxide is administrated in the hospital setting and is particularly indicated for very anxious children or children with special needs. | ||
