Περίληψη – Summary

Cyclo-oxygenase inhibitors impair fracture healing by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, angiogenesis and bone formation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short term effects of parecoxib on fracture healing in Albino Wistar rats, when it is applied for one week immediately after fracture. Closed non-displaced mid-diaphyseal fractures of the left femoral shaft were generated in each animal. In the study group, parecoxib sodium (1.06 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally every day for one week. In the control group, normal saline was administered intraperitoneally every day for one week. In both groups fracture healing was evaluated by X-rays 14 days after surgery. Bone healing was lower in the study group (10% vs 30% in the control group) 14 days after fracture but the difference was not statistically significant (p >0.05). Parecoxib delays early fracture healing in rats when it is administered for one week after bone fracture but this effect is not statistically significant.
