The role of cGMP in smooth muscle fibers was until recently non well determined. Today it is conside­red that the cGMP contributes in inhibition of the smooth muscle after contraction. Stimulation of cGMP production are cau­sed by nitrates, hydralazine and endothe­lial derived relaxing factor. The inhibition of calcium ions release from the intracel­lular pools and the stimulation of the Νa⁺­-Κ⁺ pumps can be considered as modes of action.
