Περίληψη – Summary

PPCM is a serious potentially life-threatening disease in which left ventricular systolic dysfunction occurs between the last month of pregnancy and first five months post partum in a previously healthy woman. The sudden onset of heart failure in family in joy is always devastating. Until now the etiology is uncertain and risk factors are poorly difined. The prognosis of affected women is poor with full recovery in only 23% of patients with PPCM whereas continuous deterioration is reported in up to 50% of cases despite optimal medical treatment. We undertook a systematic review of the literature and the primary objective was to summarize the current knowledge on the incidence, the pathogenesis, the clinical presentation and the treatment of this disorder.
