Cytokines are soluble polypeptides released from cells of thw immune system. Their production in endocrine glands and their actions on hormone-responsive cells is currently a subject of intense research interest. The presence of fundamental interrelationships between the immune and reproductive systems is well illustrated by the notion that survival for a livivng organism is known to depend on a well programmed system that prevents invation by other organisms and an efficient reproductive system. Communication between the gonadal axis and the immune system has been proposed for over a century, although in recent years the existence of a reciprocal relationship between the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-gonadal axis and the immune system has gained even more attention. The gonadal steroids influence the  function of immune system and  cytokines  regulate the  gonadal function. Cytokines mediate the extensive interaction between the immune system and the hypothalamic-pituitary axis in order to reestablish homeostasis. Inter-leukin-1, interleukin-6, interleukin-8  and CRH are produced by gonadal somatic cells and there is strong evidence for their involvement in the regulation of gonadal function. The aim of this article is to review  the sites of their production, the factors that affect their secretion and to speculate upon physiological and pathophysiological significance.
