Περίληψη – Summary
|
– Statins are the most common antihyperlypidemic drugs consumed by millions of patients worldwide. Recent research has shed light on their implication in bone regeneration. Statins may regulate this process mainly by inducing the expression of an osteoblast differentiation-promoting factor, Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 (BMP-2). Given that bone defects consist a major problem for modern Periodontology and Implantology, the use of statins seems a promising approach, especially because currently used methods for the restoration of these defects are not overall sufficient. On the other hand, it is clear that topical statin administration favours bone formation and promotes osteogenesis around titanium implants. Further research is needed in order to establish the effectiveness of statins as well as to examine other ways of administration apart from topical injection, for this purpose. |
