Περίληψη – Summary

Glutamate is one of the primary endogenous amino acids of the Central Nervous System (CNS). Research over the last years has proven the existence of glutamic acid subunit receptors in additional non-neuronal tissues outside CNS such as the haematopoietic system. The purpose of this paper is to define the possible affect of non-competitive NMDA antagonist MK-801 in routine medical exams such as full blood count and glow cytometry. Materials and methods: MK-801 was administrated intravenously in male wistar rats (250-350 g). Animals treated with MK-801 were compared with a group of controls. The following parameters were evaluated: Full blood count with differential plus CD3, CD54 and CD49a. Results: Initially descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation). Comparisons were performed by using non-parametric test for two independent samples (Mann-Whitney). Differences were regarded as significant if p<0.01. From the results, one can easily conclude that no difference between the two groups reached the level of significance. Conclusion Further research is needed in order to define the iv affect of glutamate acid‘s and it’s receptors on heamatopoietic system either as a toxic agent or as a therapeutical one.
