One of the most important problems in antibiotic use is patients’ compliance with prescribed and non-prescribed instructions, as well as over-the-counter use of antibiotics. The aim of this work is to assess public knowledge, beliefs and attitudes on antibiotic use, with further purpose to educate general population and improve patients’ compliance and antibiotic usage. Methods: A random sample of people answered a detailed questionnaire, which aimed to measure knowledge, beliefs and attitudes on antibiotic use. Results: Four out of ten people in Greece have antibiotics at home and one out of four people use them without a prescription, against fever (44%), flu (32%), sore-throat (19%) and cough (16%). The most common reasons for self-medication are personal experience and confidence on personal knowledge, as well as the difficulty to find a doctor during a journey or vacation. One out of three people stop antibiotic treatment as soon as one feels better. Conclusions: People’s attitudes, beliefs and behavior on antibiotic use are problematic and contradictory. It is necessary to educate people for the appropriate use of antibiotics.
