Περίληψη – Summary | It has been suggested that a high percent of human cancer has an environmental cause. The evidence for this correlation is indirect, being based on differences in tumor incidence between genetically similar populations in different environments, on the high degree of correlation between mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of various environmental agens in the Ames test and on studies with human genetic disorders with a high predisposition to cancer. It is clear, then, that an adequate limitation of human exposure to carcinogens would save lives. To identify potential carcinogens in the environment is therefore an urgent task. The standard animal tests for potential carcinogenicity take a long time and cost a great deal of money. The alternative is to screen chemicals to which man is exposed by the use of short – term tests. A short description of some of these tests is given in the present communication with emphasis on the Ames/Salmonella system, the Sister Chromatid Exchange, the chromosome aberration and the micronucleus test, and the in vitro transformation technique. Some of the theoretical and practical aspects of these tests are also Discussed. | |
