| Περίληψη – Summary | Psychopharmaca are substances that modulate the behaviour by acting on the CNS. Elucidation and understanding of the sites and mechanisms of the drug action demand fundamental knowledge of the overall functional organization of the CNS, as well as of the cellular biology of the brain. The neuron doctrine and the interconnection of neurons into neuronal circuits by chemical transmission are the basic current concepts on the functional organization of the CNS. During the last two decades research on psychopharmacology has been chanelled into two main orientations: First, to correlate behaviour changes induced by drugs to neurophysiological effects on specific brain systems, and second, to examine the effects of drugs on the CNS with reference to the neurotransmitters for specific circuits. Though, much is yet to be learned about the role of the various CNS structures to the organization of behaviour programs, the present assay attempts to describe in a simplified and comprehensible way the fundamental principles of the neuron and of the neuronal circuit function, as well as the distribution of the main brain functions to the largest anatomical divisions of the brain. | |
