Περίληψη – Summary The toxicity (nephro- and ototoxicity) manifested in various degrees and forms, the clinical and laboratory consequenses as a result of the use of newer aminoglycosides (gentamicin, tobramicin, amikacin, sisomicin and netilmicin) are reviewed here because of antibacterial efficacy and widespread use in the common clinical practice against gram (-) infections. The mechanisms of nephroand ototoxicity, predisposing factors, appropriate dosage, route of administration, pharmacokinetics related especially to the renal function (absorption, excretion, removal by peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis), interactions with other antibiotics particularly with cephalosporins, blood levels (peak and trough levels), metabolism in general of these potential nephroand ototoxic antimicrobial agents, in patients with normal and impaired renal function, are also described in detail.
