According to the traditional model, glucocorticoid hormones exert their phenotypic effects by way of binding to intracellular receptors, modulation of gene transcription and of protein synthesis. These effects are delayed and are blocked by inhibitors of RNA and protein synthesis. Therefore, this classic theory can not explain sufficiently the rapid effects of glucocorticoids presented in the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system and other organs and cell systems. This novel mechanism of action of the glucocorticoids and the nature of the involved membrane receptor warrants further investigation.
