Glycoprotein Hormones

The system of glycoprotein hormones with main emphasis on human glyco­protein hormones will be described. We will briefly review the physiology and the biochemi­stry of the hormones, their biosynthetic site, present an update of what is known about the genes coding for these hormones, and we will condluce with a summary of representative cases on eutopic and ectopic expression of these hormones in transformed cells. Α brief mention of the therapeutic value of these hormones in the human will also be made.

Considering the significant fluctuations that occur both in time and tissue specificity during the expression of glycoprotein hormone genes (genes switching on-off) that are either repeated or periodic or result from a stimulus or neoplasStic transformation, the system constitutes ah important model for the study of regulation of gene expression.
