Τα νεογνά, τα βρέφη και τα παιδιά είναι αρκετά ευάλωτα στην έκθεση τους στο παθητικό και στο τριτογενές κάπνισμα. Η έκθεση στον καπνό του τσιγάρου κατά την ενδομήτρια ζωή αποτελεί για το έμβρυο ένα είδος παθητικού καπνίσματος που θα επιφέρει δυσμενείς επιπτώσεις για την ασφαλή πορεία τόσο της ενδομήτριας όσο και της μετέπειτα ζωής του.[1]Τα έμβρυα, τα νεογνά, τα βρέφη και τα παιδιά ακούσια εκτίθενται σε πληθώρα καρκινογόνων και τοξικών ουσιών και αποτελούν τα συχνότερα θύματα των δυσμενών επιπτώσεων του καπνίσματος. Εκτός του παθητικού καπνίσματος, το τριτογενές κάπνισμα αποτελεί επίσης μια νέα ανησυχία και απειλή για τη δημόσια υγεία, και ειδικά την υγεία των παιδιών, το μέγεθος της οποίας δεν είναι ακόμα πλήρως γνωστό. Το ένα τρίτο των θανάτων που σημειώνονται στα βρέφη και στα παιδιά, αποδίδονται σε νόσους που συνδέονται με το κάπνισμα. Επειδή τα ίδια δεν δύνανται να αντιληφθούν τον κίνδυνο και να προστατευτούν από μόνα τους, η ευθύνη για την έκθεση τους σε ένα τόσο επιβλαβή παράγοντα βαρύνει εξ’ ολοκλήρου τους ενήλικες – και κυρίως τους επαγγελματίες υγείας – οι οποίοι θα πρέπει να ενημερώνουν και να βοηθούν τους μελλοντικούς γονείς, ώστε να εξασφαλίσουν ένα περιβάλλον ελεύθερου καπνού για όλη την οικογένεια.

Neonates, infants and children are quite vulnerable in their exposure to second-hand and third-hand smoke. A fetus’s exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy is also considered a type of second-hand smoke with similar unfavorable effects, both to pre-birth, and to post-birth life. Fetuses, neonates, infants and children can be unintentionally exposed to a plethora of carcinogens and toxic substances and are the most common victims of the adverse effects of smoking. In addition to second-hand smoke, third-hand smoke is nowadays considered a new threat for public health – and especially that of children – however the level of its impact is not fully understood yet. One third of the deaths that occur to infants or to children, is attributed to diseases that are associated with smoking, and because children are unable to protect themselves, the responsibility of not exposing them to smoke, lies entirely on adults and especially on healthcare professionals who must support future parents towards promoting a smoke free environment for the whole family.
