Smoking throughout the perinatal period is the most significant reversible risk factor for the development of many unfavorable outcomes, both for the women themselves, and for their fetus and neonate. Smoking is considered a chronic disease, which negatively affects public health in a global scale. The prevalence of women smokers who will continue to smoke during pregnancy is also considerably high worldwide. Finally, regarding smokers that managed to quit during pregnancy, a high relapse prevalence during the lactation period is unfortunately observed, especially for those who had quitted without having consulted a healthcare professional trained in smoking cessation beforehand. The intervention of specially trained healthcare professionals is therefore considered imperative, especially midwifes who play a crucial role during a smoker’s perinatal period.
