Introduction: Overweight / obese women pose an increased risk to their health during and after pregnancy, with effects for the short–term and long–term health of their infants. Exclusive breastfeeding for up to 6 months has multiple benefits for women and their babies. However, overweight / obese women have lower rates of intention, onset, and duration of breastfeeding than women of normal weight. Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review is to investigate the effect of female obesity on breastfeeding. Material and Method: The present study is a systematic review of the literature. The search was conducted through online databases PubMed and Google Scholar, with a publication date later than 2015. Results: A total of nine qualitative and quantitative surveys were included and evaluated. The findings showed that maternal natural barriers such as larger breasts, difficulties in positioning – breastfeeding, delayed onset of breastfeeding, perceived insufficient production of breast milk and the effects of caesarean section were significant barriers to the intention, onset and duration of breastfeeding obese women. Maternal psychological barriers were also noted, including low self-esteem in breastfeeding ability, negative body image, and embarrassment about breastfeeding in public. Conclusions: Training in obstetricians is required to provide personalized and documented support to overweight / obese women who want to breastfeed. Research on the experiences and views of health professionals and family members regarding support for this group of breastfeeding women is essential to support the development of appropriate interventions.
