Περίληψη – Summary
Παρά την αύξηση του αριθμού των ερευνών που εξετάζουν τη διαχρονική ανάπτυξη και την έκβαση των νεογνών που ανήκουν σε ευπαθείς ομάδες (π.χ. νεογνά με εξαιρετικά ή πολύ χαμηλό βάρος γέννησης), η αβεβαιότητα, όσον αφορά την ακριβή διάγνωση ή την ακριβή πρόγνωση γι’ αυτά τα νεογνά, παραμένει και αποτελεί μια συνήθη κατάσταση μέσα στις μονάδες εντατικής νεογνών. Στο άρθρο αναφέρονται οι καταστάσεις εκείνες που εντείνουν την αβεβαιότητα τόσο της διάγνωσης της κατάστασης του νεογνού, όσο και της πρόγνωση της έκβασής της. Επίσης, αναλύονται και οι λόγοι που σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις δεν είναι εφικτός ο προσδιορισμός της αποτελεσματικότητας της παρεχόμενης εντατικής φροντίδας στα συγκεκριμένα νεογνά, μια κατάσταση που προβληματίζει τους επαγγελματίες υγείας.

Despite the increase in the number of studies examining the development and outcome of neonates belonging to vulnerable groups (e.g., neonates with extremely low or very low birth weight), the uncertainty about the exact diagnosis or accurate prognosis for these neonates remains, and is common in Neonatal Intensive Care Units. This article makes reference to situations that intensify the uncertainty of both the diagnosis of the neonate’s condition and its prognosis. Also, the article analyzes the reasons due to which, in some cases, it is impossible to determine the effectiveness of the intensive care provided to these neonates, a situation that, greatly, concerns healthcare professionals.
