Περίληψη – Summary
Στη σύντομη αυτή ανασκόπηση αναφέρονται οι παράγοντες κινδύνου για την εμφάνιση της οστεοπόρωσης, η κλινική εικόνα και τα εργαστηριακά της ευρήματα, ενώ γίνεται αναφορά στις νεότερες θεραπευτικές προσεγγίσεις τόσο για την καλύτερη αντιμετώπιση, όσο και για την πρόληψη της νόσου. Η οστεοπόρωση είναι ένα συχνό νόσημα με τεράστιες κοινωνικο-οικονομικές επιπτώσεις, και αυξάνεται κυρίως με τη γήρανση του πληθυσμού. Προσβάλλονται και τα δύο φύλα, κυρίως όμως οι γυναίκες μετά την εμμηνόπαυση, κατάσταση η οποία συνδέεται  με χαμηλή οστική πυκνότητα και παθολογικά κατάγματα οδηγούνται  σε σημαντική απώλεια της κινητικότητας. Η οστεοπόρωση είναι μια νόσος που χαρακτηρίζεται από προοδευτική απώλεια της μάζας των οστών, καθώς και διαταραχή της αρχιτεκτονικής τους δομής, η οποία έχει ως συνέπεια τη μείωση της μηχανικής αντοχής των οστών, με αποτέλεσμα αυτά να γίνονται πιο εύθραυστα και επιρρεπή σε κατάγματα. Συνέπειες των καταγμάτων είναι οι πόνοι, οι παραμορφώσεις, και η σημαντική απώλεια της κινητικότητας, ή ακόμη και ανικανότητα. Πολλοί παράγοντες έχουν ενοχοποιηθεί για τη δημιουργία οστεοπορωτικού κατάγματος, όπως π.χ. χαμηλή πρόσληψη ασβεστίου και βιταμίνης D, ορμονικοί παράγοντες, ορισμένα φάρμακα, ηλικία, φύλο, οικογενειακό ιστορικό καταγμάτων, κ.ά., γεγονός που απαιτεί προσοχή στην εκτίμηση του βαθμού της οστικής αλλοίωσης και της περαιτέρω θεραπευτικής αντιμετώπισής της. Επομένως, ο καλύτερος τρόπος είναι η πρόληψη παρά η θεραπεία.
In this brief review the risk factors for the development of osteoporosis are discussed as the clinical picture and the laboratory findings, while a brief report in the new treatment approaches is considered, either for the better management, or for the disease prevention. Osteoporosis is a common disease with tremendous socio-economic consequences and is mainly increasing with population’s aging.  Both sexes are affected, and predominantly the women after menopause, a condition associated with low bone density and pathological fractures leading to a significant loss of mobility. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized from the progressive decrease of the bone mass, as well as from the aberration of the bone architectural structure, giving rise to the reduction of the mechanical tolerance of bones, in order to become more fragile and susceptible to fractures. The consequences of bone fractures are the distortions, and the significant loss of mobility, or even though disability. Many factors have been involved in the development of the osteoporotic fracture, e.g. the low calcium and vitamin D intake, hormonal factors, specific drugs, the age, sex, familial history of fractures, etc., an incidence demanding attention in the assessment of the degree of the bone lesion and its further therapeutical management. Therefore, the better way to approach osteoporosis, is the prevention than the cure.
