Περίληψη – Summary | Prophylactic antibiotics have been considered to reduce fevrile morbidity and infectious complications after cesarean section. In an attempt to evaluate the above principle 416 consecutive cases devided in two groups were studied. The first group (216 patients) was treated with ampicillin immediately after cesarean section. The second group (200 patients) was left without routine application of antibiotics. Alt patients were evaluated for febrile morbidity, specific infection sites, and hopitaiization in relation to indication, rupture of membranes and onset ofiaborornot. Morbidity was 10,64% in treated and 9,0% in control group. Urinary tract infection was found in 17,3% of the fevrile patients in the treated group and in 66,0% of the untreated patients. Hospitalization was 8,41% days in the treated and 7,95% days in the untreated group. The difference is mot statistically significant, it is concluded that routine use of antibiotics after cesarean section in a low risk population does not reduce morbidity and hospitalization of the patients. Consequently routine prophylactic antibiotics are not recomended. Good technique and judgement cannot be replaced by any antibiotic regimen. | |
