Περίληψη – Summary In the last 30 years tumor virologists have been involved in the study of molecular biology of cancer. Four groups of oncogenic viruses, the papova-, retro-, adeno- and herpes viruses have been associated with animal and human tumors and have provided powerful experimental systems for the study of oncogenesis. Many of these viruses have transforming genes “oncogenes” and the products of these genes have been well studied. Integration of viral genome into the host chromosome enable the genome of tumor viruses to survive within the cell as a separate unit and to reproduce independently. Integration can enhance the expression of adjacent cellular-genes. If the activated gene is a cellular oncogene, tumorigenesis may be initiated. The recognition and isolation of cellular oncogenes has set forth new concepts on the mechanisms of carcinogenesis.
