Περίληψη – Summary

Σκοπός της παρούσας βιβλιογραφικής ανασκόπησης ήταν η διερεύνηση των προσδιοριστικών παραγόντων της ποιότητας της επαγγελματικής ζωής των μαιών.

Η ποιότητα επαγγελματικής ζωής αναφέρεται στον βαθμό στον οποίο τα άτομα είναι σε θέση να ικανοποιήσουν τις προσωπικές τους ανάγκες μέσα από την εργασία τους. Καλύπτει τα συναισθήματα του ατόμου για κάθε πτυχή της εργασίας του, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των οικονομικών ανταμοιβών, του οφέλους, της ασφάλειας, των συνθηκών εργασίας, των προοπτικών εξέλιξης, της λήψης αποφάσεων και των διαπροσωπικών σχέσεων που είναι πολύ σημαντικές στη ζωή ενός ατόμου. Η ποιότητα επαγγελματικής ζωής περιλαμβάνει δύο πτυχές. Η μια είναι η θετική, η οποία αφορά την ικανοποίηση που λαμβάνει κανείς μέσα από την προσφορά και  ονομάζεται ικανοποίηση μέσα από την συμπόνοια (compassion satisfaction) και η άλλη πτυχή η οποία είναι η αρνητική και αφορά την κόπωση που προκαλείται από την συμπόνοια (compassion fatigue).

Η μαιευτική ανήκει στα κοινωνικά επαγγέλματα που χαρακτηρίζονται από άμεση και διαρκή επαφή με άλλα άτομα, καθώς και από συναισθηματική εμπλοκή. Όταν η μαία εργάζεται στην αίθουσα τοκετών είναι αναπόφευκτη η ανάπτυξη μιας σχετικά σύντομης, αλλά έντονης σχέσης με την επίτοκο.

Μελέτες που διεξήχθησαν υποδεικνύουν ότι πολλοί παράγοντες όπως η ανεπαρκής αμοιβή, η έλλειψη αρμονίας μεταξύ της εκπαίδευσης που λαμβάνουν και της εργασίας τους (χάσμα μεταξύ θεωρίας και πράξης), η ανεπαρκής συνεχιζόμενη εκπαίδευση, η έλλειψη της δυνατότητας εξέλιξης στον εργασιακό χώρο  και άλλες αρνητικές συνθήκες εργασίας επηρεάζουν αρνητικά την επαγγελματική ικανοποίηση και ποιότητα της επαγγελματικής ζωής των εργαζόμενων μαιών.

The aim of this literature review was to investigate the determinant factors of the midwives’ professional quality of life.

The professional quality of life is referred to the level in which individuals can satisfy their personal needs as workers. It covers the individual’s emotions regarding each aspect of his work, including the salary, the benefits, the security,  the working conditions, the provision

 of development, the decision making and the interpersonal relationships that play a significant role on an individual’s life. The professional quality of life include two aspects. The first one is positive and it is referred to the satisfaction that an individual receives from the care for others, that is called compassion satisfaction. The second one, that is considered negative, is called compassion fatigue.

Midwifery appertain to the social professions that are characterized by the direct and continuous contact with other individuals, and additionally by the emotional implication. When a midwife is working in a delivery room the development of a relatively short term, but intense, relationship with a chilbearing woman is  inevitable.

Studies suggest that many factors, such as the low salary, the lack of equivalence between the education that midwives receive and their practice (gap between theory and practice), the inadequate continuing education, the lack of the possibility of development in their workplace and other non favorable working conditions, affect the professional satisfaction and the quality of professional life of midwives.
