Improper use of asthma inhalers is one of the potential factors of poor asthma control. Inhaled medications are widely prescribed for patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); these allow therapeutic agents to be delivered directly to the lungs and provide more rapid onset, greater efficacy, and fewer side effects; proper inhaler technique is essential to maximize the benefit of medications and improve asthma outcomes. Background: Dental caries, known as tooth decay, is mainly caused through Streptococcus mutans. The S. mutans produce acids and leading to cavity formation through demineralization of enamel layer. The biofilm formed by S. mutans, composed of glucan polysaccharides, extracellular DNA, and proteins, plays an essential role in caries expansion. Aim: The correlation between glycosyltransferase (Gtf) activity, responsible for glucan matrix synthesis, and biofilm formation in S. mutanswas investigated. Continue reading

Background: The contamination with nosocomial pathogens is an increasing risk leading to the extended length of a patients’ hospital stay, and its may spread via many vehicles including, patient accompanies’ mobile phones. Aim: The current study aimed to investigation of the bacterial pathogens presence in phones of inpatients’ accompanies, and the antibiotic susceptibility profile of these pathogens. Continue reading

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory, systemic autoimmune disease that affects the synovial joints and connective tissues. It is thought that the etiopathogenesis of RA may be associated with the levels of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines as well as a vitamin D deficiency. Aim: This study sought to investigate the effects of vitamin D and of the serum levels of interleukin (IL)-17, IL-37, IL-8, and IL-10 on the progression of RA in Iraqi patients. Continue reading

Background: Several laboratory markers have been studied for use in diagnosis and assessing severity of COVID-19 at the time of clinical presentation. Aim: We seek to find the FDR relationship as a value for diagnosing the onset of Covid-19 disease for the purpose of starting to treat the patient early, at the cheapest cost and fastest diagnostic method. Background: One of the most common and potentially fatal pathogens is resistant Staphylococcus aureus. When choosing an effective medication for the management of staphylococcal infections, knowledge of the regional isolates’ pattern of antimicrobial sensitivity is fundamental. Aim: Our study aimed at identifying the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of S. aureus based on samples collected at an Iraqi teaching hospital. Continue reading

Α recent experimental study on rats has shown that the neurotoxicity of cadmium (Cd) could be associated with the levels of thyroid hormones. We, herein, discuss these findings and focus on the effects of the exposure to Cd on a widely-employed neurotoxicity marker: the activity of brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Moreover, we assess the novelty of the association between Cd-induced neurotoxicity and the levels of thyroid hormones, reflect on the poor understanding of the nature and the mechanisms defining the interplay between Cd and thyroid function, and highlight the complexity of achieving reliable and comparable experimental assessments of Cd-induced neurotoxicity through the employment of AChE activity as a marker. Finally, we express the opinion that the systematic co-assessment of the levels of thyroid hormones as well as their pharmacological manipulation could prove to be very useful in the elucidation of the mechanisms underlying Cd-induced neurotoxicity. Background: The papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancer, while Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) is the most common inflam¬matory thyroid disease. The coincidental coexistence or the possible predisposing, protective or aggravating role of HT in the development of PTC have been repeatedly examined. Aim: The aim of the present study was to eval¬uate histopathological and clinical data obtained from pa¬tients with HT, PTC, and PTC+HT so as to investigate the possible association of HT with PTC. Methodology: The study’s cohort consisted of 114 patients (67 PTC, 29 PTC+HT, and 18 HT patients). A full record of their clini-copathological and clinical laboratory data was followed by extensive statistical analysis in order to reveal possi¬ble correlations between the existence of each disease and various clinicopathological parameters. The study was conducted from 2019 to 2023 at the Hippokration General Hospital of Athens (Greece). Results: A signifi¬cant increase in the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH; p=0.031), anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (Anti-Tg; p<0.001), and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (Anti-TPO; p<0.001) was observed in the PTC+HT group. These patients also have smaller tumors (p=0.015) and a younger age of disease onset (p<0.001), while the ma¬jority of PTC+HT patients were women (p=0.023) and had infiltrated lymph nodes (p=0.002). Furthermore, the majority of patients with infiltration of the capsule be¬longed to the PTC+HT group (57.1%; p=0.032). Conclu¬sion: PTC+HT represents a less aggressive clinical state, as good prognostic markers of PTC correlate with the presence of HT. In PTC+HT patients, the PTC tends to have early onset age and the primary tumor is often small, while the majority of PTC+HT patients are women Continue reading
